Gov. LRay Villafuerte major speaker at Cebu “GKonomics”
Relates learning for Meloto, GK
and the Cebu tourism experience
Even as the province of Camarines Sur has gone a long way from an obscure and depressed province to a world-class province in the short span of time that he was provincial executive, Governor LRay Villafuerte confirmed that much of what he has done for the province he now prefers to call CamSur he owes much to the positive influence of Gawad Kalinga (GK) and the initiative example in tourism development set by Cebu province. This in essence was Governor Villafuerte’s message as one of the major speakers, together with founder Tony Meloto and project director Pinky Poe, at the Gawad Kalinga’s “GKonomics” forum held at the Cebu Grand Convention Center in Cebu City, Thursday, August 5, focused on the vision, progress and reality of the GK approach towards economics and enterprise. Governor Villafuerte related that as a neophyte governor he encountered virtually the same difficulties as GK did, in a quandary on which of the many problems he faced must be resolved first with the province’s very limited resources – the lack of jobs?, the absence of investments?, how to curb Bicolano migration to Metro Manila and abroad?, how to optimize rice productivity?, what to do with a big segment of malnourished constituents? And many other problems including how to convince the country’s leaders to give Camarines Sur a chance.
