CamSur joins #EndChildLabor movement, celebrates Project Angel Tree

Writer: Charen Vera

In solidarity with the global campaign to eliminate child labor, the Department of Labor and Employment – Camarines Sur Provincial Office (DOLE-CSPO), in partnership with the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur through its Public Employment Service Office (CamSur PESO), spearheaded the “Information Service Caravan cum Gift-Giving Project Angel Tree” on July 4, 2025 at the Digital Transformation Center, Capitol Complex, Cadlan, Pili.

The initiative is part of the commemoration of the 2025 World Day Against Child Labor sa Pilipinas, carrying the national theme, “Sa Bagong Pilipinas: Mag-aaral ang Bata, Hindi Manggagawa.”

Over 130 children, along with their parents, from the barangays of Curry, Sto. Niño, Himaao, Del Rosario, and Tinangis in Pili participated in the event. The activity focused on raising awareness about the rights of children to enjoy their childhood and to access quality education, free from the burden of labor.

DOLE Region V Director Imelda “Dedeng” Gatinao emphasized in her message that while the Philippine law allows minors aged 15 to 17 to work under certain conditions, employment must not exceed 40 hours per week and must not interfere with their education or development. “This event serves as a reminder to parents about their essential role in protecting their children’s future,” she said.

For Princess Joan, a 15-year-old Grade 9 student, her work is a vital way to support her family. “Importante po itong pagtatrabaho ko para may makain kami araw-araw at makatulong sa pamilya, lalo na’t nahihirapan din sila sa araw-araw na mga gawain,” she shared.

On weekends, Princess Joan helps her mother, who works as a kasambahay. During school breaks, Princess Joan takes on gardening and farm work to earn extra income. She uses her earnings not only for her school needs but also to help ease her family’s financial burden. Despite her responsibilities, Princess Joan remains focused on her studies. She is determined to graduate and holds on to her dream of becoming a seafarer one day.

The event featured various activities, including collaborative games, a mascot performance, and a magic show led by the CamSur PESO and DOLE-CSPO. The Philippine National Police offered free grooming services, while the Philippine Statistics Authority extended civil registration services to attendees.

Governor Luis Raymund “Lray” Villafuerte graced the event and reaffirmed the province’s commitment to the movement.

“Huwag kayong matakot mangarap, huwag ninyong tipirin ang inyong mga pangarap. Patuloy ang pag-asa, patuloy ang pag-aaral. Hindi kayo nag-iisa,” said Governor Villafuerte, inspiring the children and their families.

He also highlighted the Provincial Government’s ongoing youth development programs, including scholarships, financial assistance, free tertiary education in provincial colleges, and skills training for employment. “The Provincial Government remains a steadfast partner in helping our youth achieve their dreams,” he added.

This advocacy event marks another significant step in Camarines Sur’s efforts to uphold the rights of children and ensure that every young person is given a fair chance at a brighter, more empowered future.
