CamSur EDMERO leads basic life support training for CAAP Naga Airport

Writer: Charen Vera

The Environment, Disaster Management, and Emergency Response Office (EDMERO) of the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur led a five-day Basic Life Support (BLS) and Standard First Aid (SFA) training for 20 personnel of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) - Naga Airport. The training was conducted from August 4 to 8, 2025, at Naga Airport in San Jose, Pili, Camarines Sur.

Throughout the training, the CamSur EDMERO covered a range of topics related to emergency action planning, including the proper steps for handling emergencies, rescue breathing, chest compressions, and the correct use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). They also demonstrated how to perform CPR on adults, children, and infants, as well as how to administer first aid for common injuries such as bleeding, burns, fractures, and choking. The training also included proper techniques for bandaging and splinting.

Of the 20 participants, sixteen were firefighters, three were maintenance personnel, and one was administrative support staff.

"Ang significance kan training na ini is at least na-update kami. Although may knowledge na kami kaning basic life support, may mga updates na dai mi pa aram," explained Ian Josef Bajamundi, a firefighter at Naga Airport. He said that while their firefighters already had knowledge of BLS and SFA, this recent training served both as a refresher and an update aligned with the latest protocols.

As a registered nurse and the airport’s primary responder during medical emergencies, Bajamundi also emphasized the importance of equipping non-firefighter personnel—particularly maintenance workers, who are often first on the scene at the terminal—with life-saving skills. By training these individuals, the airport enhances its overall preparedness and safety.

An manunudan ninda digdi magagamit bako lang sa [pagrespond] sa emergency sa trabaho, magagamit [man] ninda ini sa luwas, pagbalik ninda sa saindang mga pamilya, [pati] sa saindang communities,” he furthered.

With the success of the BLS and SFA training, Bajamundi is looking forward to future training opportunities, especially in Pre-Hospital Care and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses.

This training reflects the strong commitment of the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur to capacitating individuals across sectors through continuous learning and skills development. By providing updated life-saving knowledge and practical skills, the province reaffirms its dedication to building safer, more resilient communities.
