Forty-nine (49) Public Schools District Supervisors (PSDS), school heads, and teachers attended the training to equip themselves with the necessary skills and knowledge in ICS. This training prepared them to effectively manage incidents at school, district, and division, including planned huge events like the Palarong Panlalawigan and World Teachers' Day Celebration, ensuring the safety of students and DepEd personnel.
The 3-day training was facilitated by a pool of cadres from the CamSur PDRRMC, with instructors from the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Army, DepEd, and CamSur EDMERO.
PSDS Ruth Taduran of Libmanan III District, one of the participants, reflected on her experience during the training. “As we continue to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of both students and staff, it is essential to recognize the critical role that preparedness plays in our school environment. Attending this kind of training is a vital step to ensuring that we are ready to respond effectively during emergencies, both big and small.”
In 2011, DepEd mandated the creation of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, which was later elevated into Service in 2015, in recognition of the various disaster risks arising from natural and human-induced hazards. The DRRMS, or the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service, is DepEd’s focal and coordination unit for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Climate Change Adaptation, and Education in Emergencies.
In accordance with its mandate, the DepEd CamSur set its goals in strengthening the resilience of its personnel through targeted training programs that emphasize disaster risk reduction, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the impacts of natural and human-induced hazards.
“For teachers, administrators, and staff, being familiar with ICS protocols allows for quick [and] efficient decision-making, clear roles and responsibilities, and streamlined communication. This not only reduces confusion but also enhances our ability to manage resources and provide clear direction, especially during emergencies,” furthered PSDS Taduran, highlighting the impacts of being knowledgeable about the Incident Command System.
With its success, DepEd CamSur extends its gratitude to the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur and looks forward to continuing the ICS training program.
